Miniature Mastodon

from the pink album (LP) by YB

lyrics

it's all over now
it's anyone's guess exactly how
this all came to be & where i go now
now that you're nowhere near to me
where could you be?
tell me it's not my own bungled plot
my own sad design
i want to resign, i cannot resign

will you return? an unlikely turn
a miniature mastodon
the skinny dog begs
all of my eggs are here in the basket there's one
moment in time, tantalus vine
like a miniature mastodon
i covet the cast, the fossilized past
is fading with wear on the stone
now the most cavalier gamblers have folded & gone
no chance on this one

time has elapsed
the roof has collapsed all over me
dust in the air, dust in my eyes
still you're nowhere, yet to be spied
no one can say i haven't tried, i haven't paid
hope hasn't died
if only inside, only inside

here in the heaps prehistory sleeps
a miniature mastodon
what would it take to pry this awake?
a cold splash of rain on the lawn
washes my eyes, a gifted disguise
like a miniature mastodon
out on the cusp stirring up dust
it must be mirage that i see
this figure that's coming to me
heeding the call
it's furrier than i recall
